I am absolutely 100% with you there. I hated my boys getting them as they were always full of such wasteful tat and I never gave them out. In France we have never seen them although the whole party thing is much more low key here, thank goodness. The only thing that was really expected of a birthday child is to send a cake to school for everyone to share whilst everyone sings Happy Birthday/Joyeux Anniversaire (yes, they do sing in both languages and not just for our boys). As time went on I noticed, though, that more and more parents were sending bags of sweets for each pupil to bring home as well as the cake. Not me. I was happy to bake a cake but that was as far as it went. We are not mean parents, we have our heads screwed on the right way and are not leading our children blindly down a road of expectation where nothing should ever be expected.

You took the words right out of my mouth! I can't stand party bags - and as my littlie is only 3 he hasn't had exposure to many. I find them a waste of money and effort and their contents are usually disposed of (read 'eaten by mum') before he even sees them. I don't care if other mums judge me but I'm never doing them for parties - simple! Great read as always Karen! Thank you.
