I’m going to let you in on a little secret…
I own a fair bit of make up but I hate wearing it! There, I said it.
I wear it when I have to, for special occasions or work events, or when I’m feeling particularly haggard if sleep is lacking, but secretly I hate it. I hate the faff time to apply it required, I hate having to touch it up and make sure it stays in place, and I hate having to remember to take it off. I also hate the feeling of make up on my skin, even the most basic and lightest stuff, and I literally can’t wait to get home to clean it all off when I am wearing it!
I think I look ok with makeup on, but I also don’t feel compelled to wear it, and frankly, I think the world puts too much pressure on women to wear make up to meet a standard that most of us can’t reach, realistically, because in reality, those perfect women we see on social media and in magazines and on TV either have lots of money to spend on professional make up and styling or they’ve been airbrushed and photo shopped before the photo is released.
So, I’m declaring May NO MAKE UP month. I’m getting my eyebrow and lashes tinted, as I normally do, but I’m going to avoid my make up bag for 31 days. I’m also going to be sharing updates on my Instagram and looking at how it is possible to feel ok without a mask of make up. Things I’m thinking about right now?
Is it cheating to still use primer?
Do lip balms count as make up?
Should I skip the eyelash tint and deal with my hang up over my gingery eyelashes once and for all?
What about when I need to go out or to an event?
Tricks and tips to make a face look less tired and more perky without relying on make up?
I’ve done it before and loved being make up free, I think I’ve just got a bit weird about feeling I HAVE to wear make up now I’m forty!
So, fair warning, to those out there who know me in real life, to not comment on how tired I look (I usually get away with pulling off a fairly respectable face, thanks to my old faithful touche éclat and and a few other tricks) and wish me luck…
