My recipe for making turmeric lattes at home

I love turmeric lattes and usually enjoy treating myself to a hot cup from a local cafe when I am out and about in town or shopping. It’s hard to explain why I like it, as an avid coffee drinker, it’s a bit different.

Turmeric is a very vibrantly coloured spice that is known for it’s slightly bitter taste if you eat it raw but that gives food and drinks glorious colour and flavour. It is used in many South Asian forms of cooking and is also known for it’s health benefits.

Turmeric grown from a root plant and is a natural anti-inflammatory, a powerful antioxidant, and potentially has anti-cancer effects. Turmeric may also help with skin conditions and might even be brain food

I like to use turmeric in curries but I also enjoy making turmeric lattes at home and it’s not actually that hard. I use a milk frother machine, but you can just heat up milk in a pan and whisk it.

If you are heating your latte in a pan on the stove you will need to make your ingredients into a paste but if you are using a milk frother then you don’t need to.

This makes enough for a large turmeric latte for one person. You can adapt it for more than one serving. I use coconut milk which works really well with the turmeric. You can use any other milk you prefer if you want.

My 30 second how to make is here via instagram

You will need:

300mls of your milk

Turmeric 1tsp

Maple syrup or honey 1/2 tbsp

Cinnamon 1/4 tsp

Vanilla extract (please don’t use essence, it’s horrible stuff and should be banned!) 1/2 tsp

If you are using a pan to heat your milk, warm your milk a little and mix all of your ingredients into a paste with a little milk that you have warmed to skin temperature in a bowl or jug. (ie you can touch it but it’s not too hot) and then slowly pour the warmed milk into the past and whisk it to mix it well. Pour the milk back into your pan and turn on the heat to low and continue to whisk until the milk is frothy and the turmeric mix is thoroughly mixed in.

If you are using a milk frother you simply add your ingredients to you milk in the frother and turn it on to heat and froth. The timing of this will depend on your machine. Mine takes about a minute.

Serve in a cup and drink straight away. You can top it with some finely ground pepper if you like a little heat but I prefer not to.

And enjoy.
