This is an easy but incredibly delicious chocolate orange cake that will impress everyone, who doesn’t love a chocolate cake with hint of orange? It’s simple to make and can be iced or simply served dusted with coco powder or icing sugar. It never lasts long when I make it.
You will need:
250 g margarine/butter
250 g sugar
250 g self-raising flour
4 eggs
1 large orange(for the zest)
chocolate powder for baking or other (use Cadbury’s or Swiss or Belgium chocolate powder)
Preheat the oven for 15 mins at 180 or gas mark 3, put grease paper in a baking tin, a square loaf tin works best
How to make it:
Mix margarine or butter + sugar together till smooth & creamy, then add the egg one at a time while continuing whisking.
Add the flour when the mixture is fluffy. Work all together till smooth.. Then add the zest & mix it gently.
Take a small portion of the mixture in another bowl, then add to it the chocolate powder and & mix it gently till smooth.
Put a layer of the orange mixture in the bottom of the tin, then the chocolate mixture in the middle & finally cover it with the rest of the orange mix.
Bake at Gas mark 3 or 180 then when it rises to the top & start going brown, reduce the heat a little to 160 or so, for approximately 40 minutes. Test with a cake skewer, it should come out clean when the cake is cooked.
You could also glaze this is with a chocolate ganache, using orange oil, to add to the orange flavour.
You could also make this with gluten-free flour but if you need an allergy-friendly cake we have a very easy coffee cake that may be something different to try…
