Welcome to MY Friday Rant. My little spot in the week where I get things off my chest. It may be on any topic. If you would like a guest spot to share your own rant, feel free to contact me and we can let you loose…
This week, I am a bit peeved. Why am I a bit peeved I hear you ask?
I got sucked into a conversation with someone trying to recruit me to their MLM scheme, selling products and trying to recruit others into selling products. I would like to point out that I am very happy for anyone who is making money from a legitimate business so this is not about MLM’s but how they are sold to people.
“You can work from home, and never have to go out to work, or put your children into childcare and you can be your own boss”.
This sounds marvellous in principal. Who wouldn’t want to work from home, and be their own boss?
But, it’s not that simple. I am actually my own boss, I work from home 15 hours a week, writing, and most of that is slotted in around my children and where they are. Most of the time I work when they are at school, or in bed at night, but sometimes I have to work when they are home, and it is not easy, or fun. Working from home is NOT always an easy option, and it is being pushed as the “ideal” and it’s not realistic. Also, very few work at home schemes make as much money as is claimed and you have to put a lot of time and effort into making them make money. Running a business from home, any business, involves a lot of work, and input and it’s not this easy fairy tale that is being sold to people.
“You don’t have to go out to work, and slave away at that job that doesn’t pay you enough at the beck and call of others”
Again, sounds ideal?
BUT I actually love my job, and what I do, and if I worked from home and didn’t actually do what I do, I would probably go mad. I don’t earn a huge pay packet, I certainly won’t be going on a Caribbean cruise any time soon, on my salary, but you know what? I love working with people, and serving my local community, and sitting at home trying to sell products to people all day would not work for me, in any shape or form. I don’t do my job for the money, but because I am good at it, and because I like it.
I am sorry, but I work 16+ hours a week in my day job, and 15 hours a week writing, and I work hard BECAUSE I WANT TO. I do not want to be at home, bombarding my Facebook feed all day with sales or promotions and I don’t want to be a salesperson. I wish these schemes and the people selling them would realise that what they are trying to push on the world is a false picture. Not all of us want to be working at home and working at home is not the doddle they make it out to be.
“You HAVE to make time, being busy is not an excuse. I don’t have time is not a good reason to say no to joining my team…”
You know what, as I said above, I am happily working two jobs, about to start a charity, writing for a national newspaper, I help run a Brownie pack, I am also a wife, mother and friend, I help in my children’s school, I also cram in time to exercise, as well as run my home and keep it from being total chaos. When I say I AM TOO BUSY and I DON’T HAVE TIME or energy to work in a sales scheme, I mean it. I do not want to spend what precious spare time I have on another thing. If I choose to spend my 1/2 an hour of time to myself playing Candy Crush, then that is my choice. I work very hard, I don’t need you telling me that I need to work harder.
So, if you are going to try and flog your MLM scheme to me, you are going to have to come up with something better than these phrases that you have been told to push on me to recruit me. I don’t want to join, I am delighted that you have found a way to make some money, but I would love it if you could leave me in peace, to get on with my BUSY life, and stop trying to get me to join you… And no, I don’t want to buy a wrap, diet pills, nail kits, make up, or meal replacement plans… (that’s a whole other blog rant for another day….!)
That’s my rant for this week, have you got one you would like to share?
