We love reading in our house, both adults and children alike. We all have our own particular favorite authors and books we love, but sometimes we find books that both adults and children like and can read together.
Matthew has recently started reading more advanced books with more words than pictures in them, something which we are very proud of. He’s become a very independent, confident reader and will often take himself off with his book, to a quiet spot to read. He definitely gets that from me, I was known for vanishing only to be found with my head buried in a book.
We are currently thoroughly enjoying a series of books about Humphrey the Hamster. We partly like them because we love hamsters in our house, and we have one, but also because they are fun books to read.
Humphrey is a very clever hamster, who tells stories and tales of life around him, as the class pet in a school, staying with some of the friends he makes at the weekend, making friends with other animals and grown ups he meets and getting into mischief and having adventures. He’s very clever and often solves problems for the humans in his life, without them realizing that a four legged rodent friend was involved. Humphrey is often puzzled by humans and what they do, but he generally manages to help them when they don’t seem to be able to help themselves. He’s friendly, funny and clever and appealing to his readers, both kids and grown ups.
The Humphrey books are brilliant and are a great read for children who are stepping into reading more advanced books but are also good for those who still want to be read to (or who’s parents still like reading to them, in our case) and we definitely would recommend them as part of your reading library.
We have 3 books in the Humphrey series to give away to give to one lucky winner.
All you have to do is tell us one piece of life advice you would give to an adventurous Hamster, in the comments, and then click on the link below to enter. Matthew is looking forward to hearing what you would tell a hamster…

If it’s not in your food bowl, you probably shouldn’t nibble it (I gave this same advice to my own hamster, Eric, quite regularly throughout his life)!
I think I would tell him to remember that he is little and to take care!
I would tell him to oil the wheel its too squeaky ! and not to be too curious because some things bite or hurt little hamsters
Keep it real lol x
I would tell it to keep away from wires and cats x
I would tell him to stuff his face with sunflower seeds, but don’t eat them all, save them in his pouches until he is hungry
