All the fun of an old fashioned steam fair with Carters Steam Fair

*this is a review post. We were kindly given tickets to the fair, but all opinions are our own*

I haven’t been to a proper, old fashioned steam powered fair, since I was a child. Carters Steam Fair, has been running locally to us and currently in Hersham this weekend, was a fun day out for the kids and I, and a real treat.

Carters family have collected rides that date from the 1890s to the 1960s and have restored them to their former glory. This isn’t your average fair with booming music and garish neon everywhere though, this is a dose of pure nostalgia with beautifully painted rides. It’s Instagram heaven and you might even have spotted us on TV or in the movies (we’ve featured in Paddington 2, Call the Midwife the Netflix series ‘Fairground Attractions’ and lots of others. They are a family run business and we think there is something magical about the fair when you are little and a grown up too!
There is something about a proper fair, with all the fun rides, and simple pleasures of an old fashioned fair, that makes a really brilliant family day out. The rides are all really well restored and presented and you can really feel that it’s a business that has been built up with love and care. All the people working the stalls and rides are lovely and kind, and we had an amazing time. Cost wise, you get tokens and tickets for the rides and it’s pretty good value for money too. The food stalls were very well priced too. We enjoyed spinning rides, a proper merry go round and my children proved that they have inherited my driving skills on the dodgems (I don’t think my nerves will ever get over being driving on a dodgem car by my small son who is, shall we say rather lethal behind a wheel!!) and we found out that the tween is a crack shot with a pellet gun and of course there was candy floss galore…
The kids and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we will definitely be going back next year. If they are going to be near you it is worth visiting them. You can check where they will be next here. It’s a proper treat for the whole family.
You can see what we got up to here, in a little video I took.
